1855 – Illuminated Glass Tubes
Many people believe that Georges Claude created neon signage. However, neon signage actually started as illuminated tubes made out of glass in 1903. Heinrich Geissler (German glass blower) began to experiment in mercury-filled glass tubes. Geissler set up an electrode to create an electric charge. The tubes began glowing. The tubes started to glow a soft yellow color, but the tube was not stable enough to hold up under constant lighting. This experiment led to some striking neon signs that can be found in Los Angeles today.Create a vibe with our trendy aesthetic neon signs for sale!
